Most of us are guilty in that we
never really take notice of our batteries until they let
us down or we need to clean the crud off of our
terminals. Generally we take this notice in the worst
possible location. Miles from safe harbor.
These days it is critical to make sure that the
batteries that we use on our high tech boats to carry us
out further, farther, faster and not to mention run our
highly advanced electronics all day in unison with 2 and
sometimes three bait well pumps. Add all this to a
stereo while you fish and you have a reason for a marine
battery to want to be Suicidal before it even enters
your compartment that is reserved for these slaves of
power.
In my flats skiffs I generally only run one battery,
some would say that I am crazy to run out to the
Marquesas with only one starting battery.. My answer
these days has become much more confident. I tell them
"No sweat I run Odyssey Batteries. Funny thing is, my
main starting battery looks like the same battery in my
Motorcycle.. Ok, maybe not that small but it is about
1/3 the size of the Group 27 that I used to use and I
cannot seem to kill it. No matter how many times I have
left my aerator, or a bait well pump on over night.
I mentioned earlier about all the little things that we
as boater do to torture our batteries daily while we are
on the water lets add the Monster... Trolling motors.
My setup for trolling motors are twin mounted 82 lb
thrust motors that really pack a punch and undoubtedly
use battery juice like a wino hooked up to a bottle. My
setup is done in 24 volt.

As far as the trolling motors are concerned, I cannot
seem to kill the batteries. While we were testing a bit
for Odyssey and Stealth propulsion Odyssey called me to
ask me to not recharge for three days during my heavy
season to see if I could truly kill the batteries..
Nope. The motors did not even get slow. I am currently
using 2 1750 Odyssey batteries for my purposes and they
are awesome. I recommend them to anyone looking to put a
great system together.
The cost of the Odyssey is strong at first. However,
those of you that use Trolling motors know that a
regular battery can only handle So many discharges and
recharges that eventually they die. The odyssey battery
is designed to be recharged a Ba-zillion times.
Updates on the Odyssey batteries since this article was
written
In one of the hurricanes I had a float switch stick on
me in the down position. Yep, the boat filled with rain
water and went over the batteries. The boats was on a
lift (thanks goodness). I called Odyssey to order new
batteries assuming that the ones I had were destroyed.
They simply said. "Charge em up they are fine..... They
were right. Those batteries are in my 28 fter running a
pair of Mercury Verado.
