I will have to admit that I am new
to the bow mount world of trolling motors. I have been
using the stern mount motors from Lenco for quite some
time now on flats boats and bay boats alike. Lenco
definitely has the game won on the transom. Lenco also
uses Motorguide motors for their product 100%, this
should tell you something about Motorguide.
On my Yellowfin 24 bay boat I have the Motorguide 109lb
thrust 60 inch shaft trolling motor. It is hand (manual)
operated and super easy to use. I am here writing this
review to tell anyone that may be considering one of
these units to stop hesitating and just do it.
Plenty of power, this thing will darn near throw you off
the bow if you have the prop turned sideways and nail
the power. The power comes on very clean and smooth with
little vibration to full throttle. In my world the flats
tolerate very little noise and trolling motors were way
out of the question till I got my 24 Yellowfin and found
out how shallow it would float, I needed a troller that
would operate quietly in that environment as well. The
Motorguide has more than fit the bill.
Durability is another thing I need in my world. I cant
be worried about things breaking every day, week or even
once a month. I hate having to work on stuff after a
long day at work on the water with a client. I just want
to wash the boat, plug it in and come back tomorrow for
another day of using my trolling motor. That's what I
get with my Motorguide. Its been flawless. I have had
about 290 trips on my Yellowfin 24 bay boat and so far
no issues with my Motorguide.
Mounting it was easy. The battery compartment in my
Yellowfin 24 lends me tons of room for three batteries
to set them up with a triple charger in a little
compartment in the front of my boat. There I have easy
access to my wiring for the bow mount trolling motor.
Its super easy. Yellowfin hit a home run here in
ergonomics, nice work guys.
The batteries that I use are the Odyssey PC 1700 series.
They are brand new with this boat and if they last like
the first set of Odysseys then I will write about them
in 4 years to tell how well they hold up against my
needs daily.
The charge of the 109lb thrust Motorguide and the PC
1700 Odysseys is something we have yet to drain, Using
the motor all day and even twice a day we have yet to
notice a lack of power due to tired batteries. Results
may vary if you use a cheaper brand of battery. Keep in
mind the Odysseys although not cheap are the best of the
best in Marine deep cycle and starting batteries. I can
think of two or three times I have gone two days with no
recharge, this is good for those that are not around a
power source when traveling to a fishing destination.
My trolling motor takes a beating on the bow of my
Yellowfin 24. I mean I beat on it. it goes offshore and
inshore everywhere I want to in whatever mother nature
throws at me. so far no issues and it sits up there
nicely. I am still (after 6 months) getting used to
having it up there in front of me.
Things I would change? hmm. the shaft is a bit sticky
going up and down. I fixed this by greasing it with good
water proof grease.. this way I can adjust it to my load
on the bow and dial the trolling motor in for what I
need it to do easily. Bit messy though. maybe something
they can do here with Teflon?
A friend of mine was fishing with me the other day and
he has the other brand on his boat. He said, man I wish
mine was that quiet..
So, from what I need in my world the Motorguide electric
trolling motor works really well. Maybe it will fit your
world too. Feel free to contact me regarding any
information about this. I am happy to give you my Honest
feed back.
