Tarpon Season starts in March and goes through July
traditionally here in Key West Florida. The best times
to fly fish for tarpon is May and June. This is when the
weather settles down and the new wave of Migratory
tarpon move through the Key West area and the Marquesas
coming up from the Yucatan and areas south.
The yearly migration of tarpon also brings with it a
pilgrimage of fly fishermen that come to Key West from
all over the world to go fly fishing for these mighty
creatures of the shallows here in Key West.
Fly Fishing for tarpon in Key West during the yearly
migration is easy with a seasoned fishing guide. As a
flats fishing guide here in Key West this has been a
yearly thing for me since 1992. Tarpon season is a way
of life in the spring.
I offer 4 and 6 hour trips that focus on tarpon for the
fly fisherman. Morning or late afternoon are the best
times to book a fly fishing charter with me for this
event. On any given day one can see over 500 fish with a
possibility of a good shot at over half of them. These
tarpon all being fresh in from the migratory routes they
are ready to EAT! I use flats boats and bay boats with
bow mounted trolling motors made by Motorguide. Keeping
my fly fisherman in the fish and at the right angles is
totally possible with this setup. Thanks to Motorguide
new silent technology the fish know nothing.
Hooking one of these mighty fish on the fly is probably
the most exhilarating thing a fly fishing angler can do.
Learn how to strip strike your fish and use the double
haul to make your tarpon fly fishing experience a more
memorable one. These tools will aide you in presentation
and hook up.
Fly fishing is supposed to be fun. If fly
fishing gets you aggravated let me know and I will share
with you the phone numbers of many talented fly fishing
guides that enjoy fishing with grumpy fly fishermen.
Personally I am not into it. I like for my clients to
enjoy the day and leave the stress at the dock.
